How to Work with Different Types
Working with someone whose design is different from your own is like working with a foreigner. What can you do? You both get down to studying a foreign language. Knowing how to build a working dialogue with a partner of a different type is like working with a foreign language. Manifestors are independent – at work and at home. They can set their own tasks, guide implementation, and then check the quality to make sure it’s up to snuff. If you are working with a Manifestor, inform them of a task to be accomplished, and they will see that it gets done. If you happen to be a Manifestor working on a team, inform all the participants of what you intend to do. There will be much less resistance or reason for anyone to get upset in the course of the work. A Projector is capable of seeing possibilities and has been created to work with Generators, who usually account for most of the team members. The key to working with a Projector is to recognize their Authority (I see you have a good understanding of people) and get their informed opinion on an issue (who do you think would do a better job of this?). If you are a Projector working on a team, make the most of your ability to scout talent and steer team members to the tasks that best suit them. The principles governing a Generator and a Manifesting Generator on a team differ slightly. The second type can be distinguished by the way they react a little more quickly to circumstances. That means urgent creative tasks are usually best assigned to Manifesting Generators. Generators, on the other hand, work best with long-term projects, and even the kind that can be a little routine. What’s important for both is that dialogue be built on questions. It’s the only way to get Generators involved in the process. The Reflector on your team will be your best analyst. The way they work makes it possible for them to see the big picture: from the project manager’s point of view and from that of your rank-and-file employee. If you are a Reflector, listen very carefully to your Authority: It will make you indispensable to the team.
